Campus Style
College Fashion: Dressing Well Without Looking Like You’re Trying Too Hard
The College Style Dilemma
College is probably the first time most people start thinking about their personal style. And it’s also the time when they have the least money to experiment with.
The result? A lot of overthinking, a lot of copy-pasting influencer looks that don’t translate to a college campus, and a lot of money spent on clothes that get worn twice before falling out of rotation.
It doesn’t have to be this complicated. Honestly.

The Campus Basics That Always Work
Clean jeans. A plain tee that fits. Sneakers that aren’t falling apart. A kurta for presentation days. That’s your baseline. And it works across engineering colleges, arts campuses, and everything in between.
I think what trips people up is the desire to look distinctive. But at college, being distinctive doesn’t mean wearing something expensive. It means wearing something that fits, is clean, and shows a little thought. That’s already more than most people manage.
A watch. A backpack that’s not ripping at the seams. Clean hair. These details separate “trying” from “not caring.” And the gap isn’t expensive to bridge.

Budget Sources for Students
Here’s where to shop when your budget is basically pocket money. Street markets for tees and casual shirts. Brands like Max, Pantaloons, and Reliance Trends for basics. Online sales on Myntra and Ajio for specific deals.
Thrift stores and secondhand apps are gaining traction in India too. Kiabza, ThriftLoom, and various Instagram thrift pages sell barely-worn clothes at a fraction of their retail price.
And don’t underestimate hand-me-downs. An older sibling’s well-made shirt, properly altered, can be the best piece in your wardrobe.

What to Avoid
Graphic tees with cringy text. Overly branded items where the logo is the entire point. Shoes that look good in photos but destroy your feet on a campus that requires walking. Fast fashion that falls apart after three washes.
Also, copying a full outfit from someone else in your college. It happens. It’s noticed. It’s awkward.
Find your own lane. It can be a small lane. It just needs to be yours.
