Fashion Mistakes Everyone Makes (and How to Fix Them Cheaply)
Nobody Teaches This Stuff
Fashion mistakes aren’t character flaws. They’re knowledge gaps. Nobody sits you down at eighteen and says, “Here’s how to dress well.” You figure it out by trial and error, often with more error than trial.

The good news? Most common mistakes have cheap, simple fixes. You don’t need a wardrobe overhaul. You need a few adjustments.
Here are the ones I see most often.
The Top Five Mistakes (And Free Fixes)
One. Wearing clothes that are too big. This is probably the single most widespread issue, especially among men. Oversized doesn’t mean baggy. If your shirt shoulders hang past your actual shoulders, it doesn’t fit. Fix: get it altered or size down.
Two. Ignoring footwear. You can have a great outfit and terrible shoes and the shoes win. They pull the whole thing down. Fix: one clean, versatile pair of shoes handles most situations. Keep them clean.
Three. Skipping ironing. A wrinkled outfit looks careless even if it’s expensive. Fix: iron your clothes. Or hang them in the bathroom while you shower, the steam helps. Takes two minutes.
Four. Colour overload. Wearing too many competing colours at once creates visual noise. Fix: stick to two or three colours per outfit. Let one be the star.

Five. Wrong underwear. This one’s awkward but real. Visible undergarment lines, wrong colour showing through light fabric, ill-fitting basics underneath. Fix: invest in seamless, skin-tone options for light clothing.
Five More (Slightly Subtler Ones)
Six. Belt and shoe mismatch. Brown shoes with a black belt, or vice versa. It’s a small thing that creates a disproportionate sense of “something’s off.” Fix: match them. Brown with brown. Black with black.
Seven. Not dressing for the occasion. Over-dressing or under-dressing both create awkwardness. Fix: when unsure, ask the host or check what others wore to similar events.
Eight. Ignoring proportion. Baggy top plus baggy bottom equals shapeless. Fix: if one piece is loose, keep the other fitted.
Nine. Wearing clothes past their expiry. Faded tees, pilled sweaters, stretched-out elastic. We all hang on too long. Fix: retire pieces that have visibly deteriorated. It’s not wasteful, it’s maintenance.
Ten. Copying without adapting. An outfit that works on a celebrity or influencer may not work on you because of body type, climate, or context. Fix: steal the concept, adjust to your reality.
